As I was doing my typical Thursday morning commute to work, I randomly thought about how inspired and positive everyone is in the new year. The vibe for myself and the people around me has me feeling like we are about to change the world. This notion also made me realize how important it is that we ride this wave throughout the year and Protect our energy by any means necessary.

Have Short Terms Goals and Small Wins

I think everyone gets so caught up in the idea of New Year’s Resolutions. “I want to lose 50 pounds” “I want a $20k raise” “I need to move to California right now”

Don’t get me wrong. I am the “dream big, I can do anything” millennial, artist, visionary person, but lately I’ve been trying to focus on stepping stones. Yes, I have these lofty goals like having at least X amount in my bank account, but now I am focusing on the goals that will get me there. So in the new year, I no longer eat out for lunch and I’m already saving so much money. Honestly, 90% of my income is spent on eating out because I’m lazy, so I have chosen to focus on something small that can have a huge impact. Instead of focusing so heavily on something that may seem out of reach, break that dream down into smaller goals that you can grasp and achieve. Each step will feel like a small victory and inspire you to keep going!

Surround Yourself with Supportive People

Wow wow wow. I can’t stress this one enough. If someone does not believe in your goals, they do not believe in you. I spend so much of my time questioning my dreams and goals, so the last thing I need is someone in my corner who is enforcing those thoughts. Get them out! It’s important that you play a positive and supportive role in the lives of others. A friendship/relationship works two ways, so for it to work you both have to do the work. I think it is important that the people in our lives add to our lives. If your relationship with someone centers around negativity or gossip, then get rid of them. Those relationships are candy. You get immediate gratification, but what have you really gained. My friendships center around support and I leave my conversations feeling like I have a circle of people who are all going to change the world <3

Get to know yourself this year

Stay inside some weekends. Journal. Watch Netflix. I think a lot of people are so uncomfortable with being alone that they truly do not know who they are. We spend everyday at work, with friends, tweeting, texting, and face timing other people.  Give yourself at least one or two days a month where you disconnect from the world (social media, parties, etc.) and just get to know yourself. On my work trips, I've tried to take dance classes in the cities that I am in. I have learned so much about myself as a dancer and person from dancing in communities where I have no one to rely on. I have always loved the type of people who can go to a movie or restaurant alone and not feel awkward at all. They are individuals and know who they are. Take yourself out on a date this year. You deserve it.

2017 is going to be a good year. Claim it. Preach it. Fight for it.

Let’s kick this year off with a bang!
